At home whitening is a simple, convenient and effective way to whiten your teeth. We have found these systems to be more effective, reliable and gentle on the teeth and gums than the ‘one hour’ whitening procedures. Plus, you’ll complete your treatment in the comfort of your own home.
Even though the treatment as “at home”, our dentists will still guide you through the whitening process and will always be on hand to answer any questions you may have about your treatment.
How does at-home teeth whitening work?
Firstly, a professional clean (scale and polish) is recommended before starting your at-home whitening treatment to remove any external stains or calculus.
After a consultation and dental examination to rule out dental disease, your dentist will take impressions (moulds) of your teeth. so as to create your custom-made whitening trays.
These custom-made trays are constructed in our laboratory and are made to match the form of your teeth and gums. Bleaching trays are formed to fit over the teeth and carefully trimmed to stop the whitening product from contacting the gums. On your second visit, your dentist will test these trays in your mouth to ensure they are a close and comfortable fit.
Your professional dentist will then demonstrate how to use the peroxide-based whitening gel and how to place the trays to ensure they are safely used. They will also show you what to do after removal of the trays and how to combat any side effects that may arise. Common side effects include sensitive teeth and gum irritation; this can be caused if too much gel is placed or is placed incorrectly into the trays.
The treatment tends to take between 1-2 weeks; after each application your teeth will lighten gently and you have full control over the frequency you use the gel so you can control the shade of your teeth.
